Abstract:
The chapter discusses lossy and lossless coding and compression techniques, employing temporal, spatial, and statistical redundancy along with psychovisual properties mainly based on MPEG standards. Techniques discussed include color subsampling, motion compensation, discrete cosine transform (DCT), Huffman and arithmetic coding, run length encoding (RLE) and zig zag scanning. Quality metrics (PSNR, SQNR) are also discussed. The technique are explained using Matlab - based examples.
