Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, the definition of normal (or shallow) geothermy is presented and basic geological data necessary to calculate the thermal characteristics of the geological formations and water (surface and underground) are discussed. Reference is also made in the method of calculation of geothermal potential in an area, and the method used to assess the efficiency of the ground. There are two basic technologies for the exploitation of normal geothermal energy: i. the open-circuit systems or open systems operating with pumping of underground fluids (especially water) and exploiting the capacity of constant temperature that have subsurface fluids and ii. the closed circuit systems or closed systems using a closed circuit pipes buried in the ground which are divided into two categories: closed systems horizontal and vertical (or inclined ) closed systems. The choice of the most suitable type should be done every time in study. Alongside these systems, research is developed into the possibility of storing heat (or cooling ) in underground thermal energy storage systems.
