Abstract:
In this chapter reference is made to the science of ecology and the political dimension of the ecological issue. Ecocentrism is contrasted with anthropocentrism and deep ecology with shallow ecology. Post-materialism is described as a condition conducive to the spread of green ideology and the ecological movement. The concern with limits to development and the idea of sustainable development as a response to it are identified. It analyses key Green positions, with an emphasis on ecological responsibility, the alternative economic model, social justice, grassroots democracy and opposition to violence.
