Abstract:
In this chapter, first of all, the objection as to whether nationalism constitutes an (independent) ideology is examined. Conceptual issues are clarified in relation to the term 'nation' and its uses. The conditions and circumstances of the genesis, dissemination and reproduction of nationalism as an ideology and as a political phenomenon are analysed. The main theses of nationalist ideology are summarised. The basic reasoning and the usual patterns of the national narrative are presented. Political and cultural nationalism are contrasted as ideal types. Nationalism and patriotism are compared. Reference is made to the concept of chauvinism.
