The book examines the history of Modern Hellenism from the mid-15th century to the turn of the 19th century. Initially, the political and military events of the period concerned along with the major characteristics of the Ottoman administrative mechanisms are presented. Then, the role of institutions and social elites, like the Orthodox Patriarchate, the Christian communities, the Greek armed bands and the Phanariots, in the Ottoman order are discussed. Moreover, the demographic, economic, social and ideological aspects of Modern Hellenism are examined. Finally, the Greek diaspora in Western Europe, the position of Greeks in the Venetian political context and the intellectual development of Modern Hellenism are described in extenso.
