Description:
Abstract:
This textbook introduces computational mechanics, with an emphasis on finite element methods and their applications. It presents the transition from the differential equations of typical engineering problems to their reformulation using the weak form—enabled by variational principles or energy optimization—and then to finite element discretization, which leads to systems of equations suitable for computer-based solutions. Common solution methods are also presented. The dynamics of linear problems are addressed in a separate chapter. Extensions of the finite element method to nonlinear problems are briefly discussed, along with practical topics such as the simulation of intelligent structures, optimal design strategies, and discretization improvement techniques. Throughout the book, application examples are provided, along with programs written in MATLAB, Octave, or Python. Information is included for users interested in applying commercial software packages for simulations. The textbook is suitable as an introduction to the finite element method in undergraduate engineering programs, as well as in related fields of applied mathematics and natural sciences.
