Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents methods for analyzing vector data in a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) environment. It first introduces the topic, provides basic definitions and outlines the structure of the chapter. It then discusses two main types of operations: operations on a single thematic layer and operations that require the overlay of multiple thematic layers. The chapter describes the following operations in detail: selecting objects (using various techniques), creating buffer zones, creating Thiessen polygons, creating convex hulls, merging, cutting, union, intersection, and symmetric difference, as well as data identification and elimination. In addition, possible errors from these operations are discussed and techniques for detecting and eliminating sliver polygons are analyzed in detail. The chapter concludes with an example application for analyzing vector data in a GIS environment.
