Abstract:
This book examines the genocide of Greek Jews during the German occupation of the entire Axis-occupied Greece, integrating the history of the "Final Solution" into the long course of modern Greek and European history with the ethnic, religious and social contradictions that characterized it. The aim is to provide a more complete picture of the era as well as to raise awareness of issues of xenophobia, racism and the treatment of the "other". The book consists of 5 main chapters, an introduction and an epilogue. The book can be used both by readers who have a first contact with the subject and by specialists in the field who would like to delve into issues such as: -Minorities during the interwar period and World War II. -The importance and cultural, social and economic specificity of the community of Thessaloniki. - The assimilation of Jewish communities into local societies and its importance (Romani, Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews). - The calculation of assets that overturns stereotypical perceptions of generally wealthy Jews and connects the persecution and violent seizure of Jewish assets beyond the anti-Semitic ideology of the Nazis with the anti-Semitism of Thessaloniki society, with the utilitarian practice of Nazi Germany, the collaboration of the Greek state and the general functioning of the Occupation economy, which had as its main characteristic and problem, hoarding. - Issues of post-war memory of the Second World War and the Holocaust.
