| Abstract: |
The importance of translation as a means of dialogue between different national literatures and, more broadly, as a vehicle for the transmission of culture is immense. At the beginning of the chapter, we will briefly present the basic theories of translation developed during the 19th and 20th centuries, while also clarifying certain translation strategies (such as faithfulness, equivalence, and domestication/foreignization). Building on this foundation, we will focus on the issue of translation criticism as well as the evaluation of the role of translation in the process of reception (see Chapter 4). As an example for the first issue, we will comparatively examine eight different translations of Rainer Maria Rilke’s First Duino Elegy, produced by various translators at different times. Regarding the second issue, we will focus on selected examples concerning the role translations of classical literature played in shaping the reception of antiquity in European literature.
