Abstract: |
In this chapter, the term intertextuality is clarified in its historical context—both as the result of the imitation of models and as a product of dialogue between texts. At the same time, the most significant theories of intertextuality (Kristeva, Barthes, Genette) are presented in their main aspects. Through brief examples, a series of relatively common intertextual relations—such as parody, the palimpsest, etc.—will be illustrated. The main case study of this chapter is Cervantes’s Don Quixote and its various 20th-century reinterpretations (e.g., by Kafka, Unamuno, Borges, etc.). The intertextual relations displayed by the texts that engage in dialogue with Don Quixote will be analyzed through the lens of different theoretical frameworks.
