Abstract:
The purpose of the exercise is to study the structure of the animal and plant cell and to understand the differences between them. In the introductory part, the structural features of the typical eukaryotic cell are presented and the function of the subcellular organelles is discussed. The main differences between animal and plant cells are discussed and illustrated in photographs and figures. The practical part involves the observation of typical plant and animal cells in permanent and temporary microscope slides (onion cells, parenchymal cells in leaf cross-sections, epithelial cells, etc.). In addition, information is given on the observation of specialized plant cells and formations such as the stomata and hairs in leaf epidermis (in preparations of geranium leaves, olive leaves, etc.) and animal cells (nerve and muscle cells) in order to help the student to understand the relationship between structure and function.
