Abstract: |
The aim of the customized electronic textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students is to highlight the various dimensions of the inseparable spatial dimension of human labor and conscious productive action in the shaping of places, regions, and processes. It will be the first attempt at a Greek-language educational book in the thematic area of Labor Geography, a new dynamic subfield of Economic Geography. The thematic scope of the book will focus on studying the contribution of labor and workers themselves as active agents in shaping the geography of contemporary societies. This contribution has been the subject of systematic study in recent decades, although it has been undervalued in earlier textbooks and writings on Economic Geography. Key concepts around which the arguments of the book will be articulated include place, space, and geographical scale. Initially, basic theories and empirical evidence regarding labor and the recent changes it undergoes will be presented. Then, theories of fragmentation in labor markets will be discussed, utilizing appropriate interactive materials, and the spatial-local composition of labor structures and employment will be highlighted. Subsequently, the geography of labor action and its contribution to the shaping of contemporary societies will be studied through concepts such as spatial sabotage or inter-local coordination, and international examples of different scales of action organization and their effectiveness will be highlighted. Next, modern dimensions of flexible work will be illuminated, and the related discussion of 'flexicurity' in the labor markets of the European Union will be presented through the prism of Labor Geography. Finally, the book will discuss contemporary geographical dilemmas
