Abstract:
This chapter presents the architecture and infrastructure of the World Wide Web (WWW), as a prerequisite for understanding the informational environment in which Web Information Systems (WIS) operate. The presentation is based on various perspectives and approaches. Specifically, it examines the general organization of the World Wide Web, naming spaces (URI, URN, and URL), the HTTP protocol, web servers (web/http servers), the replication and clustering of web servers, communication security in the client-server model, and web application servers.
