Abstract:
In this chapter, the reader is introduced to the fundamental concepts of the scientific fields examined in this book, starting with traditional Information Systems (IS) and their categorization, and transitioning to the new technological challenges brought about by the internet. Initially, the basic types and categories of IS are analyzed, along with their role in business processes and operations. Subsequently, the new technological trends of Internet-Centric Information Systems (ICIS) or, equivalently, IS that are developed and operate over the internet, are examined, as well as the challenges businesses face in adopting new business models based on these emerging technologies. Finally, a set of management issues encountered by businesses from the adoption of these new technologies and business models is presented.
