Description:
Abstract:
This chapter deals with the relationship between culture and translation. The translation phenomenon is approached not just as a linguistic mediation, but as a mediation between cultures. Extensive reference is made to the theories of functionalism as well as to the theoretical movement that has come to be known as the 'cultural turn', and the main positions of these theories are presented. The text (original and transcript) is treated as a communicative unit and emphasis is placed on the broader context of the production and reception of texts from different cultural communities (otherness). The ethical aspects of mediation are also examined, as is the role of translators. Finally, the new methodologies developed to study translation at the level of microstructure (words and utterances) and macrostructure (text as a whole) are studied.
