Abstract:
The initial and perhaps most creative phase in the process of producing a documentary begins with the selection of a subject from the countless stories of reality and culminates in the writing of a proposal that describes with the utmost precision the film as it is intended to be shot. The proposal will serve as a substantive guide for the subsequent stages and as an essential document for communication with collaborators and funding bodies. An important or interesting subject is only the starting point. The creative development of the idea will determine the content and manner of storytelling, the story, the structure, the central characters or participants, the originality of the approach, the director's unique perspective, and even several elements of style. Through researching the subject and considering different narrative and aesthetic choices, the reader is guided to write a 2-3 page proposal, which is also the subject of the second exercise.
