Abstract:
This e-book serves as a manual aimed at young filmmakers, students, or amateurs, covering all stages of documentary filmmaking, from the conception of the initial idea to the screening of the final film. It describes step-by-step the creative process, starting from the phase of developing the proposal and preparation, continuing with production and shooting, and then editing and post-production, and finally promoting the film to the audience. At each stage, it presents the wide variety of aesthetic choices available to the modern creator and the different narrative functions served by each morphological choice. Thus, the book fosters reflection on fundamental aesthetic and theoretical approaches, helping the new filmmaker find their own perspective, which will ultimately be expressed through clear technical decisions. The self-contained, independent chapters and their systematic divisions allow for selective reading, while the e-book functions literally as a toolkit, as the reader can consult it even during shooting via a portable device. The content meets the needs of the main textbook for 2 documentary workshops in the Film Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (with their respective exercises), while individual chapters undoubtedly serve as a resource for another 3 courses (editing, production, and sound). As in similar manuals in the international literature, we attempt to suggest methodologies and systematize a body of knowledge synthesized from the collective experience of a wide range of documentary creators, reflected in oral and written testimonies, online sources, and personal interviews. Naturally, the artistic experience of the authors themselves significantly enriches this knowledge pool, simultaneously giving the dimension of the Greek reality.
