Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents the "fate" of sources in their journey from the past, where they were produced, to the present, where they are studied by historians. Through examples, it highlights both the methods of preserving and maintaining historical documents and what exactly is preserved and conveyed to future historians. Our goal is for readers to understand why the past resembles a vast "mosaic" with only a few illuminated "tiles" and why the historian's most serious problem is not necessarily dealing with their ignorance but managing these illuminated "tiles" at their disposal. The chapter also presents examples that reveal the process of "producing" historical sources and discusses specific problems encountered during the historian's "journey" into the past.
