Abstract:
People’s food choices are determined by the interaction of many influences, both from the immediate family circle and the broader social and physical environment. The present chapter examines how various environmental and cultural factors are integrated into eating habits. Individual food choices reflect cultural influences as well as a person’s psychological motives; moreover, food is not always consumed for its nutritive value but, also, for its symbolic attributes or its psychotropic properties. In this context, the chapter presents Rozin’s theory on how dietary likes and dislikes are formed. Last, children’s fun food is employed as a paradigm to showcase the role which social and aesthetic imperatives play in shaping individual food choices.
