Abstract:
This section offers a brief overview of the historical development of the cooperative movement. For this purpose, it presents a concise definition of cooperatives and how this definition has evolved over time. Particular emphasis is given to the key ideas of the pioneers of the cooperative movement who emerged in England (King and Owen), in France (Fourier, Buchez, Blanc, and Saint-Simon), and in Germany (Lassalle, Huber, and Raiffeisen). The definitions provided by the Greek pioneers of cooperativism are also mentioned. In addition, the chapter briefly presents some early forms of cooperatives that developed in Greece, such as the tseligkata, the Company of Ampelakia, and the Syntrofonaftes.
