Description:
Abstract:
The textbook analyzes scientifically documented comprehensive/total dental care for elderly patients. It is a contribution of different scientific disciplines with the aim of preserving teeth/soft tissues, oral health, and general health. The philosophy, in accordance with the principles of geriatrics, is to determine priorities during diagnosis/prognosis/rehabilitation and to maintain the therapeutic outcome. Decision-making and treatment planning aim to enhance function/comfort/aesthetics, in accordance with WHO recommendations. The book consists of 21 chapters. It begins by presenting the latest epidemiological data on the increase in the number of elderly people and their dental care needs. This is followed by a description of the physiology of the aging stomatognathic system and the basic principles of managing complex situations. In the context of natural tooth preservation, the clinical entities/diseases of the mouth (caries/periodontal disease/pulpal involvement) encountered in daily clinical practice are presented and treatment options are analyzed. With regard to the management of partial edentulism, modern complex dental restorations are presented. The strategic position and number of remaining teeth are evaluated. The preparation of the mouth in relation to the treatment options is analyzed. Regarding the management of total edentulism and restoration with complete dentures, protocols for modifying the construction are analyzed and alternative treatment techniques are presented. Options for implant-supported restorations are described, depending on the assessment of risk factors/systemic health. Special reference is made to chronic patients, patients with Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease due to their particularities and complications. Finally, preventive measures and maintenance care after treatment are described.
