Abstract:
This chapter describes and analyzes distributed memory systems, massively parallel processors (MPPs), and computing clusters from the perspective of their organization and architecture. It examines: (a) the interconnection network that connects independent processors/computers, including its topology, routing, and switching, (b) the organization of distributed shared memory, which aims to provide the illusion of shared memory, (c) non-uniform memory access (NUMA and ccNUMA) computers, (d) examples from commercial systems.
