The second part of the book is about learning the OpenSimulator environment for designing and developing Virtual Worlds in it. This chapter gives an introductory presentation of the platform, the installation process and basic usage. The history and evolution of OpenSimulator as an open source environment based on Second Life technology is presented. The basic features and capabilities of the environment are analysed, the different operating models are presented and the alternative distributions offered are described. Then detailed installation instructions for the environment are given and the basic administration procedures are described, such as the introduction of users and their access rights, world configuration, backups, user groups, etc. The chapter concludes by presenting basic instructions for using the login environment in terms of navigation, communication, interaction with world objects, repository management and configuration of the incarnation.
