Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to present the various application areas of virtual worlds and to understand the specific requirements of these areas and the corresponding design issues that arise. Indicative applications in the following areas are categorised and presented: Education, Culture, Design and Business. For each of these areas, the specific requirements and characteristics that are emphasised in the design and, in particular, how these elements ultimately influence the choice of technology and design decisions are analysed. The design solutions that have been provided in these areas are summarised and good practices for exploiting the potential offered by virtual worlds are proposed.
