Description:
Abstract:
This chapter is about the process of designing, developing and evaluating a virtual world. It first addresses issues of the suitability of virtual worlds as a means to support the goals of an application. Some dominant methodologies for designing and developing virtual environments are presented and analysed, and ways of applying their basic principles to virtual worlds are discussed. Issues of environment design and interactions are then presented, where possible forms of content representation are described and their use in different types of environments is studied. Some basic categories of user activities that occur in virtual worlds are presented and guidelines are suggested as to the content and supported interactions. Finally, the concept of usability and its evaluation methods are analysed and some basic approaches for evaluating virtual environments are presented.
