Abstract:
The subject of this chapter is the interface of the virtual world with the user. First, the main categories of user interaction with the 3D environment are presented: navigation, object manipulation and communication. For each of these, the individual goals and the frequently used interaction techniques to achieve them are presented. Issues of interpretation of input data, mapping to actions in the environment and use of visual aids are studied, and both implementation and design issues are discussed. The design issues of the two-dimensional head-up display (HUD) user interface to the world are then addressed, with emphasis on the appropriate selection and layout of visual aids and interface elements. Finally, modern hardware categories for physical interactions and their potential for use in virtual worlds are presented.
