Abstract:
The aim of the chapter is to present an extensive overview of the Virtual Worlds area, which is the subject of this book. First, the modern definitions of virtual worlds and related environments are given and the functions offered by them are described in detail. In addition, their possible application areas and their specificities in relation to other related approaches are presented. A presentation and history of Virtual Reality and its objectives is then given. Basic concepts such as presence and immersion are explained and the main categories of material are described. Similarly, the evolution of Virtual Worlds from text-based multi-user environments to today's 3D environments is presented, ending with the current technological solutions and available platforms. Finally, the current state of the art in terms of acceptance and use of virtual worlds, both general and game worlds, is analysed and future perspectives are described.
