Chapter twelve examines burnout and secondary PTSD in the context of dependent care nursing. The causes are analysed, the signs of recognition and a brief discussion of the changes required for the recovery of the practitioner. Some of the difficulties that trainees and new professionals face in their clinical work when managing the countertransference reactions with patients and their families and applying boundaries are then described.
