Description:
Abstract:
The purpose of the book is to convey and explain knowledge related to the pathophysiological background and surgical management of retinal detachment. It is developed in 15 chapters with a historical overview, analysis of the etiology of retinal detachment, exposition of predisposing factors and the epidemiology of the condition, and prevention strategies, with particular mention of aggravating factors that cause it. Subsequently, guidelines are provided for the means and methods of preoperative assessment and preparation of the patient, as well as the methodology for identifying the causes that will lead to causal treatment. After providing concise information on the topography of the surgical field, the surgical technique is described in detail, including scleral buckling and its complications. Alternative surgical methods are then presented, along with special chapters on the management of subtypes of retinal detachment and its recurrences. The limits of extraocular surgery are discussed, as well as the alternative to it, endovitreal surgery with vitrectomy. Finally, examples of typical forms of retinal detachment and treatment methods are provided.
