Abstract: |
The proposed book "Intensive Care Issues" presents, in as practical a manner as possible, the most fundamental clinical issues encountered in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and in the treatment of critically ill patients in emergency situations, which concern the clinical assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic management of patients. The aim of the book is to serve as a concise bridge between the extensive literature available in this field and the clinical needs of students and young doctors. The initial chapters of the book include the assessment of the critically ill patient, continuous monitoring of vital functions and blood gases, and mechanical support of respiratory and renal function. Subsequent chapters present specific topics, including electrolyte disturbances, respiratory failure, sepsis, multiple organ failure syndrome, management of the polytrauma patient, and special situations in the ICU. One chapter is devoted to life support algorithms and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Clinical examples and questions play an important role in the presentation of each topic. The book requires knowledge of physiology, pathophysiology, and pathology and is primarily intended for students in clinical training in intensive care.
