Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, we will first provide the socio-historical context of the era (e.g., France as the center of European cultural life) and introduce the prevailing dramatic genres in the theatrical landscape (tragedy, comedy, sentimental comedy) and their representatives. We will discuss the new aesthetic of Crébillon's complex stories and Voltaire's attempt to renew Racine's classical model by introducing ghosts, increasing spectacle, and incorporating on-stage violence. Additionally, we will analyze the fundamental principles of the Enlightenment (improvement of living conditions and intellectual state of humans through rationalism and cultivation) and its pivotal role in theater, as an expression of the emerging new social class that despises the aristocracy and prepares for the French Revolution. We will delve into the new genre of bourgeois drama introduced by Diderot (realistic situations set in urban environments, evoking emotion in the audience and providing moral lessons). We will discuss his system, which he articulates in his theoretical writings (e.g., "The Paradox of the Actor") and in dramas like "The Illegitimate Son" and "The Family Father."
