Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, we will initially address the reasons that necessitated a radical reform of comedy in Italy, and the social and historical conditions that favored the transformation of Commedia dell'arte into a comedy with a playwright, a written script, and realistic characters with specific professions. We will analyze the characteristics of Goldoni's reform, the educational role that permeated his work (popularization of Enlightenment ideas), and his effort to eliminate the typical exaggerations and the implausible nature of the previously prevailing Commedia. We will discuss the realistic nature of his characters (emerging bourgeois class, specific professions, combination of flaws and virtues), his use of the Venetian dialect, and the multilingualism in his works. Additionally, we will address the opponents of the Commedia reform, particularly Carlo Gozzi. The chapter will include a dramaturgical analysis of "La Locandiera," character analysis, and will conclude with exercises for deeper understanding.
