Abstract:
This e-book contains essays that refer to the architecture and town planning of the Greek city from the distant to the recent past - from classical antiquity to the 19th century. The two names in the title, "Hippodamus" and "Kleanthis", mean the first the reference to the urban planning of the classical period, and the second the history of urban planning in modern Greece during the 19th century. Sections are made in characteristic periods of the history of the Greek city, with a chronological sequence. Urban space is examined within its broader historical environment: Urban planning and architecture are seen as part of the more general issues raised by historical conditions. The book refers to the contemporary era, to the issues of the conservation and management of the architectural heritage. Due to the character of this as a teaching manual, the number of references to notes is limited. The main sources appear in the text, while the notes at the end of each chapter include the main works on the subject, with commentary by the author. Each chapter is supplemented with the basic bibliography. Non-Greek names are written in Latin characters, except for those whose rendering is usual in the Greek language.
