Abstract: |
This book is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students and offers a comprehensive, multimedia approach to studying Horace’s lyric poetry. Our proposal combines a detailed introduction to Roman lyric poetry with a thorough examination of selected odes by Horace. The Introduction presents lyric poetry chronologically, covering the archaic period, Hellenistic Alexandria, and Augustan Rome. It also delves into the historical, social, and ideological contexts of the Augustan era, along with providing an account of Horace’s life and work. The educational material is organized thematically by chapter, covering topics such as poetics, love, politics, philosophy, hymns, friends, wine-spring-nature. Each chapter includes a selection of representative odes, allowing instructors flexibility in aligning with their teaching program. Emphasis is placed on language, style, narrative, and political ideology. For each ode, readers will find translations, detailed vocabulary explanations, and grammatical-syntactic clarifications for difficult points. The detailed interpretative commentary is supported by a rich bibliography and supplemented with language exercises and comprehension questions. The book extensively utilizes multimedia and interactive elements. Commentary is enhanced with hyperlinks to online bibliographic databases, websites featuring images, maps, timelines, audio clips, and videos, all providing valuable insights into literature and culture in Augustan Rome. Additionally, online presentations, quizzes, and educational games are included to further reinforce understanding, particularly of Horace’s language and style.
