Abstract: |
Interoperability is a critical component for the successful dissemination of eHealth solutions. The development of independent solutions and applications in the healthcare sector has resulted in information systems that are unable to communicate with one another. However, health, as a collective and holistic good, requires integrated and comprehensive solutions. A patient who moves from one hospital to another must be able to access their medical records, test results, treatment history, medical background, and more. Interoperability is a prerequisite for facilitating the effective delivery of eHealth services, addressing the need for collaboration, information exchange, shared and reusable data in order to enhance administrative efficiency and reduce bureaucracy for patients and citizens. This chapter provides a definition of interoperability and analyzes its various levels. It also extensively discusses the challenges and obstacles involved. One of the most important issues in the healthcare sector is the lack of a unified or standardized system for coding and classification. The amount of data and information generated in healthcare is enormous, and even today, the absence of a standardized vocabulary, terminology, formats, and protocols remains a major barrier to the advancement of automated systems and processes. The use of computers in managing health data and information further highlights this problem, as uniformity in the systematization and coding of data and definitions is essential for their correct processing by information systems. This chapter analyzes the problems related to coding and classification in healthcare, provides the definition of standards, and presents various interoperability solutions (such as HL7, DICOM, SNOMED, ICD-10, ICPC, DRG, etc.).
