Description:
Abstract:
The chapter deals with the constitutional position and activity of foreign subjects, as well of the general presence of Christian powers in the Ottoman Empire. These are two interrelated but distinct aspects of the broader issue of the Empire’s relationship with Christian Europe. Characteristic of this relationship is the strong presence of foreign subjects in Ottoman territory already from the time of the Fall of Constantinople. This phenomenon was reinforced from the 18th century onwards and led, among other things, to the formation of the Levantine communities characteristic of the large late Ottoman cities. The chapter examines the context and characteristics of the activities of foreign subjects, from the permanently settled merchants of Galata to the missionaries of the 19th century, as well as their peculiar institutional position. It also examines the multiple ways in which the international factor influenced the position of Christian Ottoman subjects and their relations with the Muslims.
