Abstract: |
The chapter examines key aspects of social relations between Christians and Muslims in the Ottoman Empire in the period from the 16th to the early 19th century. The focus of the presentation is on the unfolding of the conditions of everyday coexistence and inter-communal relations within local societies. The way in which everyday sociability was formed and reproduced is examined in connection with the institutional realities that determined the position of Christians in the Sultan’s territory. The chapter highlights the close and reciprocal relationship between social life and institutional framework, which resulted in the formation of economic networks and mixed kinship groups, communal bodies and inter-communal collective action. Particular emphasis is placed on the attendance of Christians at the Muslim court (the center of political life in local societies that embodied the legitimacy of sultanic authority as an agent of justice). In this framework is also underlined the importance of the court for the formation of political initiatives and legal claims. In addition, the chapter analyses the formation of inter-communal tension and the occasional outbreaks of violence, phenomena that constitute the other face of symbiosis, and highlights changes that led to the reformulation of social relations and to the disruption of the balance between the two confessional groups.
