Description:
Abstract:
The chapter deals with the integration of Christian ecclesiastical organizations into the Ottoman institutional framework and with the changes in their relations with the state. Already before 1453, Ottoman expansion in the Balkans had been accompanied by the granting of privileges to monastic institutions. The reconstitution of the Ecumenical Patriarchate shortly after the Fall set the pattern for the recognition of other Churches, first the Armenian and later the Serbian, while the conquest of the Arab territories in 1516/17 brought under Ottoman control the old patriarchates of the East and the Christian pilgrimage sites in Palestine, Sinai, etc. Despite the economic bleeding and the interference of the authorities, the attachment of the Christian Churches to the state tax mechanism and the integration of the monastic centers into the Ottoman land-owning system secured their survival and allowed the continuation of their work within the Muslim Ottoman Empire.
