Abstract: |
The chapter deals concisely with the position of Christians in the Arab Caliphate and the Muslim states that succeeded it, as well as with developments in Muslim-ruled Asia Minor from the defeat of the Byzantines at Manzikert (1071) until the appearance of the Ottomans on the historical scene. The aim of the chapter is to provide the knowledge necessary to understand the conditions of the integration of Christians into the medieval Muslim states on whose historical precedent the Ottoman state was based. The aim is also to present the transformation of the Christian populations of the Near East from a majority to a minority, as well as the situation of the Christians of Asia Minor on the eve of the Ottoman expansion. The Islamo-Persian tradition provided the Ottomans with models for how to incorporate Christians as subjects of the sultan, while historical experience in Asia Minor of the Seljuks, of the Turkoman emirates and of the Ilkhanids provided the background for the emergence and establishment of Ottoman rule.
