Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, systems that provide mobile satellite communications (MSS) to mobile users are studied. The base station is no longer fixed but can be in motion. Depending on the environment in which the mobile station is located, the corresponding categories of services have been established by the ITU. These services are analyzed such as LMSS (Land Mobile Satellite Service), MMSS (Maritime Mobile Satellite Service) and AMSS (Aeronautical Mobile Satellite Service). The architecture of the mobile satellite system and the functional parts of which it is composed are also analyzed. Appropriate operating frequency bands, orbit selection methods, uses of mobile services in geostationary and non-geostationary orbits are described, and the main current mobile satellite service systems (Iridium, Globalstar, Inmarsat, New ICO, Teledesic, Odyssey) are detailed.
