Description:
Abstract:
This chapter discusses a widespread small-dimension satellite communications terminal called VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal), which is used to operate ground stations with specific characteristics. After initially defining this terminal, then the services and the way of data transmission through VSAT networks are described, the advantages and disadvantages are highlighted, and the related technologies are compared. VSAT’s network subsystems, their topologies and implementation architectures are analyzed, along with detailed transmission, access, and channel assignment schemes. The chapter concludes by providing the design process for a VSAT network, along with calculations for link budgets and margins.
