Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, the propagation environment of satellite communications is presented. Propagation mechanisms and various types of losses are mentioned, starting with tropospheric losses, which absorb part of the energy of the transmitted signal, due to atmospheric gases and hydrometeors (e.g., rain, ice, clouds, fog). In addition, important phenomena such as multipath interspersions and tropospheric scintillation are analyzed. Then, the ionospheric losses, which can be predicted by statistical methods, are examined. As the losses caused by precipitation have a significant effect on satellite communications, an extensive presentation of this phenomenon is carried out. Next, various types of losses with less impact on satellite communications are presented. Finally, the Doppler effect and the ways to confront the frequency shift it causes are analyzed.
