Description:
Abstract:
Includes six exercises performed partly in the laboratory and partly outdoors. Two are introductory. They concern ways of measuring the three main parameters affecting plant growth (light intensity, humidity, temperature). The criteria for selecting the most suitable sensors and checking the reliability of the measurements are analysed. The remainder of the book is in the nature of ‘small research projects’ (see Themes of the book). The 3rd exercise deals with the anatomical, physiological and biochemical adaptations of leaves to full sunlight and shade. In the fourth exercise, plant stresses are detected by the non-invasive method of in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence. The fifth investigates mechanical and chemical defense mechanisms (leaf hardiness, phenolic content) in relation to leaf age and plant type. Finally, the sixth exercise analyses the advantage of plants releasing substances into the environment that suppress the growth of their competitors (allelopathy).
