Abstract:
In this chapter, the basic concepts of fisheries science are analyzed (catch, landings, by-catch, discards, incidental catch) and the categories of professional and recreational fishing in Greek seas and worldwide are described. The ways of calculating the fishing effort per fishing gear are analyzed along with the assessment of stock status according to the catch-based method.
