Abstract:
The long history of fishing is briefly presented in this introductory chapter together with the reasons for its intensification in the last 150 years and the course of fisheries catch over time with some examples of fisheries being briefly described. The founders of fisheries science and their achievements are presented and fisheries research in Greece is analyzed. Finally, the components of fisheries science are described along with key concepts in fisheries science.
