Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 2 begins with instructions to the reader «How to make use of the following Dictionary» but also «how to improve it!». The Dictionary of Terms of Public Health and Epidemiology is a merger by a 13-member editorial team of 21 vocabularies, which it managed to have at its disposal, into a single English-Greek vocabulary of 7528 English entries of 5227 English terms (2301 entered twice, e.g., "cohort study", "study, cohort'), 676 definitions and/or interpretations, and 653 arguments in favor of a rendering. Each entry was listed as: «english term := greek term [always exists] :≈ Definition and/or Interpretation [where exists] :~ Discussion (arguments) [where exists]». Different renders are separated by an upper dot (·). The most frequent render is listed first and alphabetically the authors and/or editors who recommend it. The immediately less frequent second and alphabetically the proposers, etc. Example: «abuse := κατάχρηση ΔΔ ΕΓ΄ ΜΚ΄ ΜΧ΄ ΠΓ΄· κακομεταχείριση ΓΔ1 ΔΔ ΕΓ΄· κακοποίηση ΔΔ ΕΓ΄ :≈ :~ Η απόδοση εξαρτάται από το πεδίο ορισμού του όρου [The render depends on the context of the term] etc.»: The reader is informed that the 1st rendering was proposed by these 5 ones, the 2nd by these 3, the 3rd by these 2; that no definitions or interpretations were proposed (:≈); and that in the discussion (:~) it is emphasized that the rendering depends on the context (field of definition) of the term: κατάχρηση of substance, κακομεταχείριση of elderly, κακοποίηση of women or children (see entry). And by consulting the definitions, interpretations and discussion, where they exist, and guided by the axioms, principles and rules of rendering (see Chapter 1), s/he can make with sufficient evidence hir decisions, which s/he is encouraged to register in the CORRECTIONS link (ΔΙΟΡΘΩΣΕΙΣ) at the top of each page of the Dictionary. Forum PhD candidates should include in their thesis a special chapter of terms, definitions, interpretations and arguments, which they must register in the link above. In this first edition, the editorial team did not favor a certain rendering. It was limited to the description of the present situation. Convergence to a term is a matter for the entire body of peers and the work of a subsequent edition.
