Description:
Abstract:
Biomedical terminology dictionaries, oriented towards Medicine (diagnosis and treatment), do not cover Public Health (disease prevention, health promotion). The fourth conference of the Public Health and Social Medicine Forum (23-11-2013) formed a two-member working group (Dimoliatis I. and Kantzanou M.) to standardize the terminology of the field. Each member of the Forum was asked for a copy of the vocabulary they may have. The group was reconstituted into twelve members and: (i) submitted (22-5-2014) a proposal for a Dictionary publication by the publisher of university-textbooks "KALLIPOS", from which the proposal was deemed directly funded; (ii) collaborated with the Hellenic Society for Terminology (ELETO); and (iii), merged the available vocabularies into a single English-Greek vocabulary of 7528 english entries of 5227 terms (2301 were entered twice, e.g. "cohort study" and "study, cohort"), 676 definitions and/or interpretations, and 653 arguments in favor of one rendering or the other. In each rendering, its frequency was added nominally. So, the reader knows how many and who rendered a term as they rendered; and by consulting the definitions, interpretations and arguments s/he will be able to make hir decisions with enough evidence. A special link at the top of each Dictionary page opens a form for corrections or addition of terms by the users. The Dictionary’s first edition must be brought to the attention of all the experts in the field, agree on one, if possible, rendering per term, and proceed to a 2nd edition. Each doctoral thesis, supervised by Forum members, must include a special chapter with an English-Greek and Greek-English vocabulary of terms, definitions and interpretations from this Dictionary (reporting the rationale for choosing one of the many renderings) or from another source (citing it). Covering all the sub-areas left uncovered in the 1st edition (Water, Nutrition, etc.), and incorporating vocabularies of all the rest Forum authors, would be a next step.
