The Development of Landscape Perceptions during the Italian Renaissance and Mannerism

Description:
Abstract:
During the Italian Renaissance, the perception of landscape underwent a significant transformation, moving from a symbolic or background element to an active bearer of meaning within artistic and intellectual discourse. The renewed interest in classical antiquity, combined with the rise of humanism, encouraged a more systematic observation of nature and space. Landscape began to appear not only as a setting for biblical or mythological narratives, but also as a subject worthy of representation in its own right. In the period of Mannerism that followed, landscape became more stylized and expressive, reflecting inner psychological states or metaphysical themes rather than striving for naturalistic accuracy. This shift marked an important step in the evolving relationship between humans, nature, and artistic imagination, laying the groundwork for later developments in landscape theory and aesthetics.
