Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 4, entitled “University education – Women and Scholarship in Greece (1890-1976)”, consists of five thematic sections. In the first section we investigate women’s access to university (scientific knowledge/scholarship) and the public dialogue that takes place until 1890 for its support or rejection. Subsequently, the first university female population is recorded (numbers – demographic characteristics – origins – choice of studies) and particular emphasis is placed on their experiences and on the reactions they face within the university space. We investigate the professional prospects of the first graduates of the University, both in education as well as in the broader labour market with particular reference to the role played by the first women university lecturers (yfigitries) in the School of Medicine. In the third section we record the gradual broadening of the professional field of women graduates from 1920 to 1976, emphasising the increase of the student population and the academic prospects of graduates. The role played by the University of Thessaloniki is particularly highlighted and reference is made to the first women lecturers (yfigitries) and professors of both universities. In the fourth unit stress is placed on the “women’s studies” at the university from 1980 onwards, on the creation of the first “Women’s Studies Groups”, and on the research, intervention. In conclusion, after a brief evaluation, reference is made to the prospects which are delineated in the universities mainly relating to issues of gender education policy.
