Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 2 "Georeferencing" refers to the process of geographical adjustment, which transforms the local coordinate reference system of the digitization medium (e.g., digitizer, screen, scanner) into the coordinate system of the map being digitized. Geographical adjustment precedes digital recording and is a prerequisite for proper recording, as the product of this process is the file with the coordinates of the positions of the geospatial entities that will be included in the database. Through the process of geo-referencing, distortions due to the inherent properties of the printing material (paper) of the maps from changes in temperature and humidity, as well as from the method of their reproduction, are corrected. For this purpose, an Affine or other transformation is mainly used, depending on the condition of the map. The chapter's subject, beyond the transformation, includes the method of selecting the number and positions of the georeferencing points, the interpretation of the transformation coefficients, the critical evaluation of the result through the transformation error, and the acceptable limits.
